Why it exists
The three were written separately and they work separately, but they were always one motion.
The ledger tells you what is claiming your attention and how much of it you never agreed to. The card decides which of what is left deserves an uninterrupted hour, and closes the doors on it. The loop is what makes both of those a practice rather than a good week in March.
This is not a complete library. It is the three that are ready, and more will join them.
The method it carries
The Arc — argued in full in Why You Can't Focus.
Something claims your time. You judge whether it deserves depth. You cross into the session. You sustain attention against decay. You come back out, and the work exists.
Nearly every focus failure can be located at one of those five positions, and the usual mistake is to treat a failure at Decide as though it happened at Hold — to blame willpower for a problem of judgement.
Each instrument here sits at a different position. Having all three is not a bundle so much as a full turn of the ring.
What is inside
- The Attention Ledger, complete
- Before the Hour, complete
- The Operating Loop, complete
- One page on how the three fit together, which is the only page unique to the set
How it is used
- Start with the ledger, for a week. It tells you what the other two are for.
- Use the card before any hour you intend to protect.
- Put the loop in place once the first two have stopped feeling like an experiment.
